About the Wimmera Health Care Group

Wimmera Health Care Group is the major specialist referral centre for the Wimmera and Southern Mallee region of Victoria, servicing an area of 61,000 square kilometres and a population of approximately 54,000 people. We have campuses in Horsham and Dimboola and provide emergency and critical care services for adults and children.

Every year Wimmera Health Care Group treats more than 10,000 inpatients, 16,000 emergency patients and 123, 000 outpatients. With a workforce of approximately 850 staff, we are the largest employer in the region.

Since 1975, Wimmera Health Care Group has been continually accredited. We have voluntarily met or exceeded the stringent patient care standards for competence, staffing, facilities and equipment set by the Australian Council of Healthcare Standards.

Wimmera Health Care Group plays an important role in the education and training of health professionals. Our Horsham campus (Wimmera Base Hospital is recognised by universities and medical and nursing bodies as a training and teaching centre for undergraduate and postgraduate studies. This alone is a tangible indicator of the efficiency and effectiveness of how the organisation is run. It is also testament to the dedication and commitment of staff and Board members who contribute to our endeavours to maintain and improve the quality of health care services.

About the Region

Wimmera Health Care Group’s campuses in Horsham and Dimboola are located mid-way between Melbourne and Adelaide on the main rail and road networks linking Victoria and South Australia.

The city of Horsham is the capital of the Wimmera. The region relies heavily on dryland cropping.

Horsham boasts many fine cafes, restaurants and hotel bistros. Horsham's CBD is the main shopping precinct, while the Horsham Plaza provide a variety of retail outlets with something for everyone, from boutiques, antique and giftware stores to multi-national chain stores.

With low crime rates, the Wimmera region offers a safe and secure environment to raise your family.

To the east of Horsham (approximately one hour drive) is the Grampians National Park. This is where you can discover spectacular waterfalls and rock formations, native fauna such as koalas, kangaroos, wallabies, emus, echidnas, reptiles and more. Flora such as banksias, orchids, thryptomene, heaths and ferns provide nectar for the many species of birdlife that inhabit the Grampians. The aboriginal culture is evident throughout the Grampians. Rock art sites are a pictorial record of the area’s traditional landowners.

A must for all visitors to Horsham Rural City is a trip to Mount Arapiles in the Tooan State Park, where climbers from around the world visit the mountain which has several thousand climbs, some of which are the most difficult in the world. This area is the home and playground of world renowned mountaineers and adventurers Brigitte and Jon Muir.

Horsham Rural City is the perfect base for bushwalking, rock climbing, abseiling, orienteering, angling, four wheel driving, hunting, golfing, cycling and horse riding.

The Horsham Golf Club is located just seven kilometres from the town’s centre, with a new modern clubhouse being built with function facilities, the course is recognised by many as the best course outside the Melbourne metropolitan area.

There are numerous wineries scattered throughout the region, with several specialising in shiraz. The area is renowned for its dynamic arts community with numerous galleries, festivals and live performances held throughout the year. A range of sporting facilities are also on offer including a state of the art aquatic centre, velodrome, stadiums, football, netball and tennis clubs and much more.

An excellent range of quality child care services and schools (both public and private) are also available and for those wishing to undertake further studies, the University of Ballarat has a campus in Horsham.
