The Victorian Tidy Towns Committee has named Wimmera Health Care Group’s Blue Frog Program as a state finalist.

The program, which aims to reduce the organisation’s waste and carbon foot print won the Horsham title for Resource Recovery and Waste Management earlier in the year and was last week announced as state finalist in the category.

The Program is implemented by the Environmental Management Working Group which meets monthly. Working group chairman and director of finance and corporate services Mark Knights said the state nomination was recognition of the hard work put in by all staff to achieve great results.

“The working group implements the ideas, but it is up to the entire staff to make the decision to do the right thing,” Mr Knights said.

“This nomination is proof that the staff’s hard work is paying off. For instance in less than one year, we reduced the amount of waste collected from the organisation by 20 per cent.

“We have also tried to replace non-recyclable goods with recyclable ones wherever possible and are always calling for more ideas form staff on how we can make more environmentally friendly decisions at Wimmera Health Care Group.”

The Blue Frog Program uses the image of a blue frog as a visual reminder to get staff to make environmentally friendly decision. For example the Blue Frog can be seen near bins and at light switches.

State winners will be announced at a ceremony on Saturday, October 12.
