Wimmera Health Care Group’s emergency department has improved its performance and reached all targets set by the Department of Health and Human Services.

This quarter the department achieved all five targets relating to the time in which patients are treated, including 81% of patients either admitted to a ward or sent home within four hours of presenting.

Emergency Department nurse unit manager Bernadette Ryan said it was the first time the department had reached the target across all five categories and it was due to a concerted effort from staff in various departments.

“This is a great achievement for staff and it shows our ability to work together across the organisation to provide the best outcome for patients,” Ms Ryan said.

“We have improved our systems in how we manage treatment and we continually monitor our timelines to ensure we meet those best practice targets.

“We have received a lot of support from the executive and senior staff to make positive changes to improve our systems.”

Chief executive Chris Scott said the results were fantastic and congratulated staff on their efforts.

“It is great to meet targets but what is more important is how we are treating patients,” Mr Scott said.

“We are doing our best to ensure they are treated competently and in a timely manner. If getting a patient admitted to the ward for further treatment is in their best interest, then that is what our staff work towards.”

The Victorian Health Services Performance Monitor helps set best practice targets for hospitals across the state.
